-Very important to God, second only to love of God
-What God wants from Christians; commandment that must be carried out
Importance:
-Commandment from Jesus, so cannot be ignored
-By loving your neighbour you are carrying out God’s will, leading to a reward in heaven
-Not easy, as most love themselves a lot, showing loving your neighbour is a struggle

A

Meaning:
-Christians need to show love to everyone, not just friends
-Sometimes the one you need to love the most is your enemy, which can be difficult
-For the ill or less well off it could mean their life or death
-What God wants so everyone is cared for and no one suffers
Importance:
-Shows who is a person’s neighbour: everyone, including enemies
-By loving your neighbour you are doing what God wants
-Reassures Christians that loving neighbours is not as easy as loving yourself, but they need to try and do it
-Shows your neighbour is anyone in need of compassion, despite race and religion

Explain the meaning and importance in Matthew 25:31-46 (The Sheep and the Goats) of love of others. (10.1.8)

A

Story:
-Would separate people like a shepherd separated his sheep from goats -Sheep would be those who helped Jesus in His time of need -People will say they never did this, but Jesus said whatever they do for someone suffering, they do for Him, therefore allowing them into heaven -Goats did not do these for other people so did not do them for Jesus. As they did not love others, they will go to hell
Meaning:
-Christians need to show love to everyone, especially those in need
-By showing love for others you’re showing love for God
-People will be judged by god by the way they act, treat others, and spend their time
-Love of others is what God wants, so everyone is cared for and no one suffers
-As Jesus is not bound in time or place (due to resurrection), in the needy it is Christ himself appealing to us through the person
Importance:
-Showing love for others is showing love to God which is the greatest commandment
-Explains loving others means caring for all the needy
-Loving your neighbour is important and what God wants
-Shows there is a reward for caring for the suffering: eternal life in heaven with God
-Shows people who choose no to help those in need will be punished

Carmelite Nuns

  • Take the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience
  • Follow the Carmelite rule: Mass, work, pray
  • Spend large amounts of time in contemplative prayer
  • Devote their life to God by living away from the world, so they do not have any distractions; conduct daily Mass with the Eucharist, and pray for those in need and the whole world

Missionaries of Charity

  • Take evangelical counsels, and extra vow (‘wholehearted and free service to the poorest of the poor’)
  • Work in various centres run by the order, to worship in Mass and prayer, to share God’s love with others
  • Some run centres for the abandoned and dying, to help them die in dignity and get love from God for when they die
  • Some run leprosy centres in LEDCs, by showing care and offering cures
  • Some run hostels providing free accommodation for single homeless men that have been living rough; work to ensure charities and employment agencies are involved in trying to get the men back into society
  • Run orphanages, AIDS hospices and care for refugees and flood, epidemic and famine victims to share God’s love with others

  • By keeping the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle for adoration, by providing opportunities to adore the Body of Christ, encouraging the congregation to show love of God
  • Offering sacraments to the people; allowing them to show love to God through baptism, First Confession and Communion, regular confessions, confirmation and marriage
  • Through the liturgy of the word; giving regular Bible readings and homilies explaining readings to the people, giving people a chance to learn about God so they can show their love for Him
  • Enabling people to share worship with Catholics of the parish, enabling people to grow in the love of God, and show their love to Him
