Unit 1 AOS 2 regions of the brain Flashcards
hypothalamus
[forebrain]
regulates body’s internal environment
-maintenance of homeostasis
-regulation of internal processes e.g thirst
thalamus
[forebrain]
receives infronation from sensory organs and passes it to relevant parts of the brain for analysis.
-regulates arousal, alertness
cerebrum
[forebrain]
primarily responsible for cognitive processes such as learning, memory and thinking
forebrain is responsible for
complex mental processes, attention filtering sensory information and maintaining homeostasis.
midbrain is responsible for
relaying messages around brain regions, filtering and directing sensory information, regulation and arousal
reticular formation
[midbrain]
network of neurons that regulates alertness and modifies muscle movements
-regulates sleep wake cycle
the hindbrain is responsible for
basic survival functions such as regulation of sleep-wake cycle, regulation of autonomic functions such as heart rate, and coordination of muscle movements.
pons
[hindbrain]
regulates sleep, arousal and some muslce movement
medulla
[hindbrain]
controls vital survival functions such as breathing and heart rate.
connects brain to spinal cord-pathway for neural signals
cerebellum
[hindbrain]
coordination of movements and regulation of posture and balance. Also involved in learning, memory and other cognitive processes.
