Unit 1 AOS 1 SAC 1 Flashcards
What are the two branches of the nervous system?
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Central nervous system (CNS)
-processes and responsibilities to information from the PNS
Comprises of the brain and spinal cord
-brain: forebrain, midbrain & hindbrain
-spinal cord: incased in the spinal column
nerve extends from base of brain to lower back
spinal reflex (invoultantry response)
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
TWO FUNCTIONS: - communicate info from organs to CNS, both internal and external
- to communicate info from the CNS to the body organs.
- SOMATIC SYSTEM
- AUTONOMIC SYSTEM
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
SOMATIC SYSTEM
-SOMATIC SYSTEM: voluntary movements
motor neurons communicate messages from the CNS to the particular muscles intended to be moved.
Sensory neurons- sensory information (senses)
Motor neurons- Movement
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
AUTONOMIC SYSTEM
-AUTONOMIC SYSTEM: involuntary or automatic movemnt
Eg. breathe, digest , circulation and blinking
Sympathetic NS: activated in times of stress
fight/flight/frezze
heart rate goes up
Parasympathetic NS: maintain state of calm returns body to homeostasis (parashoot coming back down)
