Unit 1- Acquiring culture- nature/nurture debate Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 4 arguments for nature?
A
researchers from Finland, IQ scores by Plomin,1988, the jim twins, oskar stohr and jack yufe
2
Q
What are the 4 arguments for nurture?
A
geinie weily, watson&raynor,1920, zimbardostandford prison experiment, rochom p’ingien
3
Q
the jim twins (nature)
A
- had many strange similarities despite not having any communication
- eg. habits and interests
- There was a 500,000 in 1 chance of this
4
Q
researchers from Finland (nature)
A
- found that there was a genetic similarity between prisoners who fit under ‘extremely violent offender’ known as ‘warrior genes’
5
Q
Oskar Stohr & Jack Yufe (nature)
A
- identical twins who were separated not long after birth
- even though they were raised differently and apart they stilled had a lot of similarities between them
6
Q
Geinie Wiley (nurture)
A
- was never socialized
- she was unable to do things that we assume are automatic or instinct such as walking, siting and chewing
- these may actually be taught the same as language and skills
7
Q
Rochom P’ingien (nurture)
A
- disappeared at her home at the age of 8 and had therefore completed her primary socialization
- returned at the age of 20 after no contact with humans lacking basic human skills such as the ability to talk, she preferred to crawl than walk
- could not adjust back into human society
- shows that humans require socialization throughout their whole life and not just primary socialization
8
Q
Watson & Raynor, 1920 - little albert (nurture)
A
- little Albert showed no reaction or response to anything
- He was shown a rat but every time that he reached for it a piece of steel was hit
- the next time he saw a rat he started crying and crawling away quickly
- a month later he had a fear of all stimuli
9
Q
Zimbardo standford prison experiment (nurture)
A
- a simulation prison was built in the basement of Stanford university psychology building
- some student were prisoners and some were guards
- the guards became verbally and physically aggressive whilst the prisoners showed signs of depression, acute anxiety, crying and rage
10
Q
IQ scores polmin, 1988 (nature)
A
- did a study on non identical and identical twins, together and apart and found that genetics are responsible for 68% of IQ variation
