Unit 1: Acids Flashcards
What are common bases?
Metal oxides, metal hydroxides and ammonia.
What do acids do in aqueous solutions?
They release H+ ions
Definition of an alkali
A soluble base that releases OH- ions in aqueous solution.
Definition of an acid
A species that is a proton donor.
Definition of a base
A species that is a proton acceptor.
Definition of a salt
A chemical compound formed from an acid when an H+ ion from the acid has been replaced by a metal ion or another positive ion, such as ammonium.
Definition of anhydrous
A substance containing no water molecules.
Definition of hydrated
Crystalline and containing water molecules.
Definition of water of crystallisation
Water molecules that form an essential part of the crystalline structure of a compound.
