(Unit 1) Ache (1951) Flashcards
Asch (1951) Aim
To find out how people would behave on a straightforward task.
Asch (1951) Procedure
123 male US undergraduates were set up in a situation in which 7 people all sat looking at a display. They had to say out loud which one of the three lines, A, B or C was the same length as the stimulus line.
All but one of the participants were confederates, and the genuine participant was always the last but one to answer.
Asch (1951) Findings
75% conformed on at least one trial
50% conformed on more than half the trials
Asch (1951) Conclusion
There is a strong tendency to conform to a group pressure in a situation even when the answer is clear. Our behaviour changes in the social situation.
