Unit 1. a: Characteristics Of Living Organisms Flashcards
Definition of life processes
The functions that enable an organism to live.
There are 8 of them: movement, reproduction, sensitivity, homeostasis, growth, respiration, excretion and nutrition.
Definition of movement.
The action that causes A change in place or position
Definition of reproduction.
The process by which more of the same kind of organism is created.
Definition of sensitivity
The ability to detect or sense changes in the environment (stimuli) and adapt to them
Definition of homeostasis
The ability to maintain a constant internal environment.
Definition of growth.
The permanent increase in cell size, cell number, or both.
Definition of respiration
The chemical reaction that breaks down nutrient molecules (glucose and water) in living cells to release energy.
Definition of excretion
The removal of toxic waste from metabolism and substances in excess of requirement.
Definition of nutrition
The action of taking in nutrients (organic substances and mineral ions) for energy, growth and tissue repair.
