Communication
A systematic process in which people interact with and through symbols to create and interpret a message.
Symbols
Any object or picture the represents things. The meaning of the symbol is reflective of the culture and context with which it is interpreted.
Content level of meaning
The literal message.
Relational level of meaning
Relationship between the people in the communication varies the meaning of the message.
Linear/transmission model
Communication is transmitted from sender to receiver in consistent straight forward way
Interactive model
Adds feedback to linear model (the response to the message.)
Transactional model
Sequential model in which communication is simultaneous. There is a focus on ‘We’ instead of ‘I’.
Noise
Anything that interferes with the intended meaning of the message. Can be anything from background noise to personal preoccupations.
Where did the study of communication begin?
Believed to have started with the classics in in ancient Greece.
Focus on rhetoric and democratic life. How to structure speeches.
What is Aristotles rhetoric theory?
Use ethos (credibility), pathos (emotions), and logos (logic) to persuade.
Quantitative research
Numerical research based on objective data.
Qualitative research
Nonnumerical knowledge. Interpretive data. Interpreting symbols.
Critical research
Identify and challenging communication practices that oppress, marginalize, and harm individuals. Study of power.
Rhetorical criticism
Process of examining a text to see how it works communicatively. Looking at the literal message and the underlying one.
Elocution
Study of public speaking. Contested theories about utterance, delivery, and pronunciation. Looked at the best way to use our body and voice to convey a message.
