What is absolute location?
True location in the physical world
What is relative location?
Location in reference to a landmark
In the theme of Place, what do physical characteristics describe?
Things that are determined by nature (e.g., mountains, rivers, climate)
What is Human Environmental Interaction?
Humans adapting to or modifying the environment
What is Movement?
Interacting with other people
What is Region?
The basic unit of study in geography, defined by common characteristics of language and culture.
What is a globe?
A round representation of the Earth (3-D)
What is a map?
A flat representation of the Earth (2-D)
What does a physical map show?
Natural, physical features on the Earth’s surface (e.g., mountains, rivers, lakes)
What does a political map show?
Boundaries of countries, cities, counties, states, etc.
What are map symbols?
Colors, lines, shapes, and symbols that represent information on the map.
What does a Map Key show?
An explanation of the symbols on the map
What is a Compass Rose?
Directional marker on a map (e.g., Cardinal, N, E, S, W or intermediate, NW, NE, SW, SE
What is Latitude?
Imaginary lines that are horizontal and above and below the equator.
What is Longitude?
Imaginary lines that are to the left and right of the Prime Meridian.
What is the equator?
An imaginary line going east to west at 0 degrees latitude separating the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
What is the Prime Meridian?
Imaginary line passing through Greenwich England at 0 degrees separating the Eastern and Western hemispheres.
How many time zones are there in the US? (Not including Alaska & Hawaii.)
4 (i.e., Pacific, Mountain, Central, Eastern)
What is Climate?
Long-term average weather conditions that occur in a particular way.
What is Weather?
Short-term conditions of the atmosphere.
