What is geography?
the world, nature, humans and the interaction of human and nature.
What does geography force us to identify?

Why care?
What are the two main types of geography?
Physical Geography (forests, rivers) Human Geography (houses, churches)
Why is geography important?
It teaches us skills like map reading.
What are the major levels/scopes of geography?
Local (ex. Markham) Regional (ex. York Region) Provincial (ex. Ontario) National (ex. Canada) International (ex. World)
What is latitude?
Lines of latitude measure north-south position between the poles.
What is longitude?
Lines of longitude run between the North and South Poles, measure east-west position.
What is a hemisphere?
a half of the earth, usually as divided into northern and southern halves or eastern and western halves
What is a continent?
any of the world’s main continuous expanses of land
What is a scale?
the ratio of a distance on the map to the corresponding distance on the ground.
How to we identify specific location?
using longitude and latitude
ex. Kingston, Jamaica (17N 76W)
How do we identify relative location?
ex. Canada is north of USA
What are the mapping rules?
appropriate title your name black ink for labels pins/icons that are suitable north arrow in appropriate location accurate labels + pin points correct spelling
What are the SPEEC lenses?
social political economic environmental cultural
What is a cartographer?
mapmakers who measure, map, and chart the earth’s surface
spend most of their day indoors working on computers
