What is the function of a map?
To help organize complex information and highlight patterns
What is a reference map
They are designed for people to use/refer to for general information about places
Thematic Maps
Visually displays data based on a specific theme (ex. Choropleth, dot distribution, isoline, etc.)
Scale
Ratio between the size of something in the real world and on a map
Spatial patterns
The organization of certain patterns on a map
Absolute location
Exact spot where something is located
Relative location
Describing where something is relative to the location other places//things
Elevation
Distance something is from sea level
Pattern distribution
the arrangement of a certain statistic over a certain area
Choropleth maps
Uses various colors and patterns to show the distribution of data
Dot density
Each dot represents a certain quantity of a special characteristic
Cartogram
Size of countries varies with respect to a certain value
