Dependent variable
factor that is measured (effect)
Experimental group
group that receives treatment or independent variable
Control group
comparison group that is absent of the independent variable
Operational definition
description of the specific procedure used to determine the presence of a variable
Experimenter bias
when a researchers expectations of the outcome of a study influences the results
Demand characteristics
clues participants discover about the experiment and suggest how they should respond
Placebo
treatment is given to the control group that has no active ingredient
Placebo effect
believing the independent variable will have an effect rather than the actual effect
Standard deviation
measures the average difference between each set and mean of data set
Central tendency
average or most typical score
Normal distribution
