Theology
The study of the things of God
Ecumenical
Meaning “the entire inhabited earth,” this term refers especially to the teaching of the whole church across the centuries and around the globe.
Doctrine
Distinct Christian teachings; the overall content of our faith
Dogma
Christian teaching at the highest level of authority and trustworthiness; share ecumenical agreement
Creed
Brief statements of faith in a mature form that enjoy broad recognition as faithful summaries of key scriptural teachings
Orthodoxy
Right Christian belief.
Heresy
Beliefs that have been rejected by the church.
The Wesleyan Quadrilateral
Model for thinking about sources and authority for theology that includes scripture, tradition, reason, and experience
General Revelation
Typically refers to God’s self–disclosure in creation and the human conscience
Special Revelation
Refers to God’s specific self-revelation in the history of Israel, the Incarnation of Jesus, and Scripture
Prayer
Conversation with God through which we come to know him better and develop greater reliance on him.
Inspiration
The Spirit’s work as the author of Scriptures
Canon
Means “measured” and it refers to the whole of Scripture as the measuring stick for Christian faith and life
Marcion
Around the year 140, this man pushed for the church to adopt a coherent collection of texts, and he proposed his own list
Illumination
The ways that the Spirit continues to work in and with God’s people to help us understand and be faithful to what we read in Scripture
Patripassianism
suggestion God the Father died on the cross
Scripture
reading, studying, memorizing, meditating upon, and obeying the bible in order to know God and become more like Him
Hermeneutics
The task of biblical interpretation
Tritheism
The belief that there are three Gods
Modalism
In an attempt to protect the oneness of God, this view understands Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as three ways in which the one God works in the world
Subordinationism
Any view that makes Jesus and the Spirit less than the Father.
Adoptionism
The understanding of Jesus that makes him into an ordinary human being who merited the title Son of God. (form of subordinationism)
Partialism
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three separate parts that come together to form God.
Arianism
In an attempt to protect the uncreated nature of God, this view taught that Jesus was God’s first and greatest creature.
Nicene Creed
This summarizes the affirmations of the Councils held to reject Arianism
Homoousias
Meaning same in essence or substance, this term was affirmed of the Son in relation to the Father at the Council of Nicaea
Perichoresis
mutual indwelling, this term is used to point to the relational nature of God, such that each person of the trinity indwells the others.
Doctrine of Appropriations
Although the works of the triune God are indivisible, while reading the biblical accounts we see that it is fitting to talk about the distinct work that each of the divine persons does in the world.
Illumination
The ways that the Spirit continues to work in and with God’s people to help us understand and be faithful to what we read in Scripture
