Unit 1 Flashcards
Metal Reactivity
Increase down a group
Decrease Left to Right
Metallic Properties
Decrease Down a Period
Non Metallic Properties
Increase Along a Period
Non Metal Reactivity
Increase From L To R
Decrease from T to B
What do elements in the same group have?
Same number of valence electrons
What are the Four special families?
Alkaline metals 1, Alkaline Earth Metals 2, Halogens 17, Noble Gases 18
What does the tow number tell us?
How many shells/rings an atom had
What is Periodic Law?
A rule, developed from many observations, stating that when the elements are in order of increasing atomic number, their properties show a periodic reoccurrence, and gradual change
What is Nuclear Attraction?
Occurs with a period
As number of protons increase so does the nuclear attraction. This means the electrons in the ring will be pulled closer to the nucleus’s as the nuclear attraction increase, therefore making atom smaller
Shielding effect
Occurs with in a group
As number of rings increase the communication or pull on electrons becomes weaker causing the rings to relax and become larger. Outer rings are shielded by innner rings
Atomic Radius ( period and group)
L to R would decrease
From top to bottom it will increase
Ionic radius( cations and anions) trend
From L to R decrease
From top to bottom Increase
What is Ionization energy
The amount of energy required to pull 1 electron out of outer most shell ( in gas state) of an atom
Ex. Be +energy —> Be^2 + electron released
Ionization energy trends
From L to R increase
From T to B decrease
What is Electron Affinity
The amount of energy released when 1 electron is added to the outermost of an atom ( in gas state)
Ex. Cl(g) + 1e —> Cl- + energy
