Q

What are some of the domestic operations/local tasks the ADF has been involved in?

Hint 2 and 1…

A

Two current domestic operations: Operation Southern Discovery, and Operation Resolute.

Operation Southern discovery came into effect on 1 July 2016. Number of personnel is around 16. It occurs annually and primarily between November and March. It is a peace time activity in support of the Australian Antarctic Division and the Australian Antarctic Program (AAP). That program focuses on improving understanding of the role of the Antarctic and Southern Ocean within the global climate system and its implications for marine ecosystems through research programs.

The ADF will provide Defence personnel, equipment, and aircraft to the region to enable various scientific programs to be conducted…the involvement is consistent with the Antarctic Treaty’s prohibition of any military activity other than the provision of personnel or equipment in support of scientific or other peaceful purposes.

Operation Resolute is another domestic operation which commenced on in July 2006.
The number of personnel involved is up to 600. The operation is the ADF’s contribution to the whole-of-government effort to protect Australia’s borders and offshore maritime interests. It covers Aus exclusive economic zone which extends up to 200 Nautical miles from mainland the offshore territories.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) contributes forces under Operation Resolute to Maritime Border Command, a multi-agency taskforce within the Australian Border Force (ABF).

ADF personnel may be on Operation Resolute, either at sea, in the air or on the land. They work alongside personnel from ABF and other agencies.

The maritime border command protects from threats such as illegal maritime arrivals, violence at sea, prohibited imports, and pollution.

ADF elements may be allocated to Operation Resolute include: airforce aerial surveillance, Navy boat patrols, and army regional force surveillance patrols which conduct land based security operations.
.
A recently ceased operation is COVID 19 assist. From March 2020, Operation COVID-19 Assist contributed to the whole-of-government response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Operation COVID-19 Assist responded to a range of contingencies and supported various initiatives, including: hotel quarantine program assistance, Frontline COVID-19 swab testing support, and Logistical support for civilian authorities.

Q

What is Australia’s national defence strategy?

A

The National Defence Strategy implements Governments direction for the ADF…which is comprised of three strategic objectives, namely:- (1) DETER action against Australia’s interest (2) SHAPE the strategic environment and (3) RESPOND with creditable military force when required.

All three objectives were equally weighted until 2024 where the NDS now makes deterrence the primary objective…and the NDS sees a Strategy of Denial become the cornerstone of Defence planning.
