Agents of socialization
Socializations that occurs with individuals and within groups. Family is the primary agent of socialization. other agents are peers, the media, work, etc
Primary Socialization
Occurs from birth to when we start school when we learn languages & other nescessary skills for life ( Family the primary agent at this stage)
Peer Pressure
Deviant behavior that goes against society’s norms because of influences of peers (Ex. students likely to bully other kids if their friends do it too)
Mean world syndrome
The belief that the world is more dangerous than it actually is
Total institution (Goffman)
Physical separation of group of people from the rest of society with an attempt to standardize & control all aspects of their life
Ex. Jail
Gender Socialization
Process of learning gender identity & roles through socialization
Role Strain
Competing elements within a particular social role & status
Ex. Having two test for different classes on the same day)
Role Conflict
When one different social role conflicts with another
Ex. Have to watch your sick sister & miss school because of it

Consist of dress, age, sex, race, ethinicity, gestures, etc

Measure of social value
Ascribed Status
A social position/ status a person is either assigned to at birth or takes on involuntarly
(Like being next in line to become a king)
Acheived Status
A social position that is within our power to change
Master Status
A status that dominates others & thereby determines a person’s general position in society
(like being a mom)
Gender Typing
Practicing gender based expectations & behaviors
Ex like saying little girls are cute and boys are strong
Face-saving tactics/ aliging actions
Actions that are used to help restore our identity & interactions around us (Used when we embrass oursleves)
Account
A verbal statement used to explain an unanticicipated, embrassing or unacceptable behavior ( Ex. Like saying I was late to work because of traffic or saying I was late for class because of my friend)
Disclaimer
A verbal assertion given before the fact to forestall any complaints (Ex. Like saying no offense but… or saying Im not racist but…)
Cooling out
Is a phrase used to gently persuade the individual who has lost face by providing them with an alternative identity (Ex. When you break up with someone say you want to still be friends which also them to accept a different identity which is being your friend)
