What is a hazard?
A hazard is a potential source of harm or has a negative health effect on a person or persons.
What is a risk?
A risk is the chance or probability that a person will be harmed or experience an adverse health effect if exposed to a hazard.
Where can hazards occur?
Health environments (GP surgery, hospitals, intensive care)
Social environments (residential, own home)
Childcare environments (nursery, preschool, school)
Public environments (parks,cinemas)
Transport (minibus, ambulances)
Name the 9 Types of Hazards:
Environmental
Biological
Chemical
Psychological
Working conditions
Working practices
Lack of security systems
Musculoskeletal
Physical
Name the 4 impacts of hazards:
Injury/harm
Illness
Poor standards of care
Financial loss
What is intentional abuse?
Where harm and abuse has been deliberate for example a care assistant who supports an individual by helping them with their shopping and buys items for themselves is deliberately abusing the individual financially.
What is unintentional abuse?
Harm and abuse can be caused through poor standards of care
e.g. a care worker moving a patient in a careless manner is unintentionally physical abusing through poor care.
Name the short term affects of abuse:
Bruises, cuts and broken bones
● Looking unkempt, dirty or thinner than usual
● Contracting a STI
● Low self esteem
● Displaying challenging behaviour
● Feeling angry, anxious or tearful
Name the long term affects of abuse:
Low self esteem
● Developing mental health issues e.g. depression/self harm
● Inability to sleep
● Difficulty trusting others and forming relationships
● Addiction
● Disempowerment
● Fear
