What are the employers responsibilities?
● Developing, promoting, maintaining and enforcing health and safety policies and procedures
● Training staff on their policies & procedures
● Conduct and review risk assessments
What is an employee?
An employee is anyone that works for or is employed by an organisation e.g. Doctor, nurse, receptionist are all employed by the NHS.
What are the Employees responsibilities?
● Use health & safety equipment in accordance with training e.g. aprons, gloves
● Identify hazards and suggest solutions
● Report shortcomings in health and safety
arrangements, report serious or imminent danger
● Following employers guidance and instruction
● Read policies and participate in training
What are the service user responsibilities?
● Read through any information leaflets e.g. welcome packs
● Cooperate with staff who are supporting health and safety e.g.
allow staff time to wash hands between patients
● Adhere to health and safety e.g. not entering a cupboard with
chemical hazards
What are direct costs?
It is the direct impact of an employee or employers actions, thus could be physical, financial or emotion e.g claims on employers and public liability insurance sick pay, fines.
What are indirect costs?
This is the indirect impact of an employee or employers actions this could be physical, financial or emotional e.g. recruitment costs, overtime payments, low staff morale
When does criminal prosecution happen?
This happens when an employee or employer commits a criminal offence e.g.gross negligence of a nurse could cause a patient’s death.
When does civil prosecution happen?
This happens when a service user/patient can take a doctor, nurse, social worker to court if they feel they have not met the responsibilities of their job role e.g. a doctor giving the wrong treatment- If found guilty the doctor would have to compensate the patient/service user
