Understanding paradigms for nursing research Flashcards
1
Q
What is a paradigm?
A
- patterns of belief or general assumptions
- sets of philosophical underpinnings from which research approaches follow
- (research traditions, world views, methodologies)
- provide viewpoint, process and principles –> investigation conducted and interpreted
2
Q
What are the paradigms in nursing research?
A
Quantitative and Qualitative
3
Q
What are other words for quantitative?
A
positivism (empiricism), post positivism
4
Q
What are other words used for qualitative?
A
- Interpretive and constructivism (underpinned by these)
- critical social theory
5
Q
Use the example of red to describe the 2 paradigms
A
Quantitatively:
-measured objectively (wavelengths)
-accept something if it can be objectively measured
Qualitatively:
-wish to know what red means regardless of an objective definition
-subjective view
6
Q
Quantitative strengths?
A
- generalisability
- description and prediction
- objective
- varifiable
7
Q
Quantitative limitations?
A
- context stripping
- explanation needed
- value-free oobservations not possible
- absolute truth rarely established
8
Q
Qualitative strengths?
A
- articulates voices of pps
- deliberately subjective
- multiple realities
- seeks understanding and shared meaning
9
Q
Qualitative limitations?
A
- may ignore risk factors
- less objective (may not discriminate important patterns)
- less explanatory power
- theorising limited
