Understanding health and fitness Flashcards
Define health
A state of complete physical, mental and social well being not just the absence of disease
What is fitness
Being physically fit and able to meet the demands of the environment
Explain the relationship between health and fitness
Fit and Healthy
Fit but poor physical health eg cyclist with asthma
Fit but poor mental health eg runner with depression
Fit but poor social health cyclist no friends
Healthy but poor fitness eg good health but fatigues easily poor endurance
What are the five components of health related fitness
Bone composition
Cardiovascular endurance
Flexibility
Muscular endurance
Muscular strength
What is body composition
The percentage of the body made up of muscle, fat, bone and water
eg gymnast
What is cardiovascular endurance
The ability of the heart and blood vessels to continually supply working muscles with oxygenated bloods individual can exercise for longer at high intensity
eg wheelchair marathoner
What is flexibility
The rage of motion that is possible at a joint. Flexibility reduces injury and improvs aerobic fitness as use whole length of muscle
eg kickboxer
What is muscular endurance
Ability of a muscle/group of muscles to make repeated contractions over time without tiring
eg rower
What is muscular strength
Ability to use muscles to exert force against against a resistance
eg gymnast, net baller, rugby prop.
What are the three types of muscular endurance?
Static - muscles contract to maintain position
Dynamic - muscles contract and extend repeatedly causing movement
Explosive - muscles contract at high speed
Stability is the ability to maintain the position of the body.
True or false
True
What are the six areas of skill related fitness
Agility
Balance
Coordination
Power
Reaction Time
Speed
What is agility
Being able to change direction or position of body quickly ensuring athlete maintains control fo the movement
eg slalom skier
What is balance
Maintaining stability and postural alignment which increases efficiency of movement
eg gymnast
What is coordination
Being able to use two or more body parts at the same time to complete a skilled movement efficiently
eg basketballer
What is power
Being able to perform a dynamic movement to generate a rapid force.
Power =strengthxspeed
eg shot putter
What is reaction time
The time between the stimulus and th movement in response
eg goalkeeper
What is speed
How fast an athlete can travel a specific distance or perform a specific movement
eg rugby winger
