Principles of Training Flashcards
What are the principles of training
The guidelines athletes follow to ensure training is effective:
Specificity
Progression
Overload
Reversibility
Tedium
Define specificity
Making your training match your sport
eg long distance para cyclist does continuous training on a bike to increase cardiovascular fitness and cycling technique but they don’t do swimming
Define Progression
Increasing the amount of training done gradually according to individuals needs and to prevent injury
eg rugby player wanting to increase muscular strength starts with 10kg biceps curls then increases weight to 12kg after 2 weeks
Define Overload
Making the body work harder than normal over a period of time to improve a specific component of fitness
eg long distance runner usually trains at 70% max HR trains at 75%
Define Reversibility
Stopping or reducing the level of trainingso fitness gains made are reduced or lost.
Best avoided sometimes due to injury
eg rower injured has to stop but loses muscular endurance
Define Tedium
Means boring - if a variety of truing methods are used training is more motivating and interesting
eg tennis player does interval and weight training as well as game related work
