Understanding Health Flashcards
BIOLOGY; - Health and Fitness - BONES - MOVEMENT - Non-Communicable Diseases - Microbes - Body Defence - Damages
What is fitness?
Fitness is the ability to meet the demands of the environment.
What is health?
Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being not just the absence of a disease or illness.
What are the four factors of fitness? (FOUR Sā)
Suppleness (Flexibility)
Stamina
Strength
Speed
What is Suppleness?
The range of movement possible at a joint.
What is stamina?
Endurance, the ability to keep going.
What is strength?
Muscle Strength
What is speed?
Moving muscles quickly.
4 MARKER; Why is regular exercise important?
- Reduce risk of heart disease
- Strengthens bones
- Reduces stress levels
- Maintains and improves fitness
What is our skeleton for?
It gives the body SHAPE.
It allows the body to move.
It PROTECTS the major organs.
What size bone would you find bone marrow in?
Long bones, is where you would find bone marrow.
What does bone marrow do?
Bone marrow produces red blood cells.
How many red blood cells per second are produced by the bone marrow?
2.6 million
What minerals do skeletal bones store?
calcium, and phosphorus
What is the pairs that muscles work in, to move bones called?
ANTAGONISTIC PAIRS
How do antagonistic pairs work?
One muscle contracts, while the other one relaxes
Give an example of an antagonistic pair
biceps and triceps
What happens when somebody has heart disease?
Some of the muscle cells in the heart die.
Why do the cells die?
They cannot get enough oxygen and glucose
What is a drug?
A drug is a chemical substance that affects the way the body works by altering chemical reactions.
What is a medicinal drug?
Substances that have an effect on the body and can be used to treat illness and disease
Give an example of a medicinal drug
painkillers
What is a recreational drug?
A recreational drug is a legal drug, like caffeine, or alcohol.
What are muscles attached to bones by?
tendons
4 MARKER: Name some effects of alcohol on the body
- More blood travels to the surface of the body
- Activity of the brain slows down
- Sense of pain is reduced
Give two ways breathing changes after physical activity
- It speeds up
- Breathing is deeper
Why do you need joints?
- To be able to bend
- So you can move
What mineral is needed for strong bones and teeth?
Calcium
HOW DOES ANTAGONISTIC PAIRS WORK?
Watch a video
What is a part like a bicep or tricep?
muscles
6 MARKER; Describe how the human body prevents the entry of microorgansims, with defence mechanisms.
What effect does low temperature have on bacteria?
It slows down growing.
Why is it important tendons do not strech?
So that muscular force is not lost.
