Separating Mixtures Flashcards
Chemistry Topic 3
What is a solution?
A solution is a type of mixture that is made when one substance dissolves and mixes fully with another.
What is a solute?
The substance that dissolves
What is a solvent?
The liquid that the solute dissolves into
What does soluble mean?
A substance that can dissolve in water is soluble
What does insoluble mean?
Insoluble means a substance cannot dissolve in water
What is the conservation of mass?
The idea that in a chemical reaction, mass is neither created nor destroyed.
What is solubility?
The amount of solute that can dissolve at a given time.
How does temperature affect solubility?
Higher temperature is more solubility.
What is the items left in the filter paper after filtration called?
The residue
What is the liquid that goes through the filter paper called?
Filtrate
What is filtration good for?
Separating an insoluble solid from a liquid
What is evaporation used for?
Separating a soluble solid from a liquid
What is distillation?
Distillation involves boiling the mixture and then condensing the gas to produce a liquid.
What is the name of the piece of apparatus that cools down the hot gas after the mixture has been heated?
Condenser
What is fractional distillation?
A separation technique used to separate a mixture of liquids with different boiling points.
