Achievement gap
A term used to describe the difference and academic achievement between African-American or Latino students and white, middle-SES students
Ability grouping
A method in which students of similar abilities are placed into groups so that instruction can be matched to the group needs
Bilingual education
Instructional programs for students are provided instruction in their first language as well as the language of the majority; transitional bilingual education, early exit bilingual program, late exit bilingual program, pull out programs, paired bilingual education, dual language programs = two-way programs

Characteristic ways of processing information that develop unconsciously around underlying personality trends
Cultural deficit model
A model used to explain the achievement gap as the result of home culture that fails to prepare students to succeed academically as compared to the mainstream culture
Dialect
A special form of a language with distinctive pronunciations and grammatical structures
Differentiated instruction
Providing different learning environments to different students that are sensitive to individual levels of readiness
Gender
Traits and behaviors that a particular culture believes to be appropriate for men and women
General intelligence
The term used for the theory that intelligence is a single trait that people have in varying degrees
Inclusion
A comprehensive approach to educating exceptional children and regular classrooms with a coordinated web of services

And instructional plan mandated by IDEA that is devised by the general and special education teachers, resource professionals, and parents to meet the needs of exceptional students

A series of majors special education laws which prescribe a free appropriate public education for every child

A global index of people’s intelligence, derived from one of several different standardized tests attempting to measure intelligence
