rubber laminated springs
Where is the secondary suspension?
Between bogie frame and car body
What does the secondary suspension consist of?
Two air bags on each bogie
What do the air suspension ICs do?
Isolate the surge reservoirs for one bogie
Both bogies must be isolated
Where are the Sanders?
A and B side
Tc and DMp - No. 2 end only
Mp and DT - both ends
When do the sanders operate?
Automatically when BCU senses wheel slip
During EP braking
How is the sanding system tested?
Automatically by TMS
What kind of coupler does a HCMT have?
Semi-automatic Scharfenberg Coupler
On cab ends of train
What kind of coupling can a HCMT train do?
They can tow mechanically and pneumatically
How do you open the coupler cover?
unlock the locking mechanism
raise the cover
lock it in the open position
What ICs are under the Coupler Cover?
Uncouple Device IC
Towing Unit IC
BP End Cock
MR End Cock
Horn IC
Where are the BCM located?
A side of every car
What is inside the BCM of EVERY car and what does it do?
5 ICs and BCU
BCU Controls the application and release of EP friction braking.
Controls air into the brake cylinders
What are the 5 ICs in BCM?
- Brake Supply IC
- BC Bogie 2 IC
- BC Bogie 1 IC
- Tread Scrubber IC (Tc only)
- Park Brake IC (not Tc)
- Sanding Equipment IC
Tc - Trailer Cab
What does the Towing Unit do?
Exam
Allows HCMT brake control to interface with other rolling stock via traditional BP connections during rescuing procedures
Brake Pipe!!!
Tc - Trailer Cab
What does the transition coupler do?
Allows for connection to a locomotive for rescue purposes
Tc - Trailer Cab, DT - Door Trailer
What is in the Auxiliary Power Supply Container?
Auxiliary Inverter
Medium Voltage (MV) Box
Battery Charger
Tc - Trailer Cab, DT - Door Trailer
What does the Auxiliary Power Supply system do?
Converts 1500vDC to 415v 3-Phase AC
Supplies 415v 3-Phase AC to:
- BATH
Tc - Trailer Cab, DT - Door Trailer
What does the battery Charger do?
Converts 415vAc to 110vDC
Charges batteries
Supplies 110vDC to the train
Tc - Trailer Cab, DT - Door Trailer
What does each Battery Box contain?
80 cells
If there is a failure of one set the others can supply 110vDC to the trainline
Tc - Trailer Cab, DT - Door Trailer
How long do the batteries supply emergency power?
2 hours
Tc - Trailer Cab, DT - Door Trailer
What can the batteries do even after supplying emergency power for 2 hours?
They can still raise pantographs and restore normal functions
Even after being stabled for 2 weeks
Tc - Trailer Cab
What is in the Air Supply Unit (ASU)? (4)
Exam
Main Air Compressor
Air Dryers
Filters
Backup Compressor Governor
Tc - Trailer Cab
What is the ASUs purpose?
To maintain Main reservoir pressure within 850-1000kPa
Tc - Trailer Cab
What does the Shore Equipment do?
Exam
For Downer to test electrically and/or pneumatically.
We don’t touch
Charges batteries!!
Exam
DMp Car and Mp Car
What is in the BCM?
BCU and 5 ICs
BCU and ICs
- Brake Supply IC
- BC Bogie 2 IC
- BC Bogie 1 IC
- Park Brake IC
- Sanding Equipment IC
DMp Car
What is in the High Voltage (HV) Box? (2)
HSCB
Harmonic Wave Detection Device (HWDD)
DMp Car
What is in the Variable Voltage and Variable Frequency Cabinet (VVVF)?
Two Traction Inverter Modules - one for each bogie
TCU
DMp Car
What do the Traction Inverters do?
Convert 1500vDC to 3-Phase variable voltage and variable frequency for powering traction motors
DMp Car
What does the Auxiliary Compressor do?
Exam
It is battery powered
It provides air for the pantograph when MR pressure is low
DMp Car
When will the Auxiliary Compressor automatically raise the pantograph?
When there is insufficient MR pressure - below 700
When the car has been isolated from the MR system
DMp Car vs Mp Car
what does the under frame Pantograph Isolating cock do?
On Mp Car it isolates flow of MR air to pantograph.
On a DMp car it won’t because of auxiliary Compressor. The compressor will kick in.
Mp Car
What does the Medium Voltage (MV) Box do?
Maintains medium voltage - 415vAC that is produced by Auxiliary Inverters
When does the trip lower?
Automatically when master control key ON and Tap ON
What is the purpose of the High Voltage Box?
It powers the Traction and Auxiliary Power Supply (APS)
