Undercliff Drive Flashcards
Where is the Undercliff Drive?
The Undercliff drive is situated just East of the islands Southern tip. It runs between St. Catherine’s point and the town of Ventnor.
Describe the geological feature occurring in the Undercliff Drive region.
An active landslide dominates the undercliff drive region measuring about 0.5km wide and extends for approximately 12km along the undercliff. The strata in this region dips to seeward which is coincident for the material to slip towards the sea and helps encourage further movement of the landslide. The movement is primarily translational.
What implications does the geological feature occurring at Undercliff Drive have on residents in the area?
For some residents in the area, the road is the only means of vehicular access to their property. The road is constantly being deformed by the landslide and a large section of the road is completely blocked off. Parking spaces for cars are few and far between and are even being rented to other home owners. It has been estimated that remediation works would cost in the region of £25-30m.
