Gore Cliff Flashcards
What are the two main types of rock at Gore Cliff?
The two main types of rock are the greensand material and chalk. The greensand displays the joint system very clearly and the chalk forms a more uniform section above it at the top of the cliff.
What event happened in 1928 at Gore Cliff?
A large infamous fall occurred at Gore Cliff in 1928 which caused a major disruption to the road beneath it. A large mass of material fell from the cliff on to the road causing the road to be blocked and forming a massive scar in the cliff appearance. 2 to 3 days later a large landslide occurred due to the additional loading from the fall. The landslide was very significant and continued from the cliff right down to the sea edge. Holiday maker recognised cracks occurring and managed to photograph the event.. Shortly after, the road was abandoned.
Other than the landslide at Gore Cliff what is the other main feature?
A mud flow has formed at the bottom of the cliff and flows toward the sea. The feeder area comes from the cliff area and the flow becomes very active in periods of high rainfall. Mud flows of this type is what causes disruption to the Undercliff Drive and can appear dormant in periods of dry weather.
