Unconscious and Conscious Responses Flashcards
What is a conscious response
voluntary reaction to sensory stimuli that means the person is aware of their action
What is an unconscious response
automatic and involuntary response to stimuli
What ns is responsible for a conscious response
somatic ns
What ns is responsible for an unconscious response
autonomic response
A spinal reflex is
an automatic and involuntary response that occurs to stimuli and doesn’t involve the brain
What is an example of a spinal reflex
pulling away from a hot or sharp object
What is the process of the spinal reflex when you touch something hot?
- pain is received by sensory neurons
- travels to the spinal cord by a sensory neural pathway
- message is received by an interneuron in the spinal cord
- message is sent by spinal cord via motor neurons to withdraw the hands
What is a reflex arc?
is a neural pathway that controls a reflex and doesn’t involve the brain
What are the two types of reflex arcs?
Monosynaptic and polysynaptic
What is a monosynaptic reflex
involves only one synapse
- affector neuron brings message to synapse and effector neuron transfer it to the muscle
What is a polysynaptic reflex
- involves an interneuron that connects the affector and effector neurons
- at least 2 synapses
What is the difference between a polysynaptic reflex and a monosynaptic reflex
- monosynaptic = one synpase
- polysynaptic = at least 2 synapses
