What is coping?
attempt to try and manage a stressor
What are coping strategies?
methods or ways people use in order to manage or deal with a stressor
What is context-specific effectiveness?
when there is a good match between a coping strategy and the stressor
What is coping flexbility?
ability of a person to change or adapt their current strategy for another strategy that is more appropriate when dealing with that stressor
What is high coping flexibility?
when a person can actively change their strategy and recognise that it is not working
What is low coping flexibility?
when people use the same strategies even if it isn’t effective
How can exercise relieve stress?
releases cortisol for energy
- increases fitness and person’s ability to cope with stress
- releases endorphins which increase mood
What is problem focused coping?
involves efforts to try and change the stressor - fix the stressor
What is emotion focused coping?
when we believe we have little control over the situation
- use strategies dealing with emotional stress
What are approach coping strategies?
an effort to try and confront the stressor directly
What are avoidant coping strategies?
aims to avoid any feelings of emotional stress
= activity is focused away from the stressor
