ultrasound Flashcards
what is an ultrasound?
is a diagnostic imaging technique or therapeutic application of ultrasound. it is used to create an image of internal body structures
what are some uses of an ultrasound?
- see developing baby’s health
- evaluate blood flow
- guide a needle for biopsy or tumour treatments
- examine breast lump
what is a diagnostic ultrasound?
- high frequency waves produce inside images of the body
- sound waves bounce off internal structures, creating echoes
- echoes are picked up by the probe and turned into a image
what are the three types of diagnostic ultrasounds?
external
internal
endoscopic
what is an external ultrasound?
probe placed outside of the body and send sound waves inside
what is an internal ultrasound?
probe places inside of the body and sends sound waves inside
what is an endoscopic ultrasound?
probe attached to a tube (endoscope) and inserted inside of the body where it sends sound waves inside
what is the method of external diagnostic ultrasound?
- piezoelectric crystals convert echoes into electric signals that are sent to the scanner
- produces a 2D image
what does external ultrasound use?
involves the use of a transducer or a transceiver which is placed on the skin and is moved over the body that is being examined
what are the uses of ultrasound on the pregnancy?
- age and gender
- due date
- disease diagnosis
- maternal health
pros and cons of external ultrasounds?
+ safe
+ non-invasive
- misdiagnosis
what does internal ultrasound use?
internal examination, can look more closely at prostate glands and ovaries
- transabdominal images the prostate and urinary organs. same with transrectal ultrasound which tends to be first
pros and cons on internal ultrasound?
\+ safe \+ non-invasive \+ faster \+ more accurate than other procedures - misdiagnosis
