Ultrasonics Flashcards
Which sides of the ultrasonic do we use?
laterals and back sides
What side of the ultrasonic do we NEVER use?
never use point of tip, avoid face of tip
All strokes used to remove calc deposits with ultrasonic
horizontal, oblique, vertical (magnetorestrictive)
When is use of ultrasonics contradicted?
-unshielded pacemaker
-issues w/ swallowing (dysphagia)
-COPD lung disease
-on restorative work
Deplaquing power setting
low/ out of phase
Calc removal power setting
medium/ in phase
What is the stroke pattern for magnetorestrictive ultrasonics
eliptical
What is amplitude?
POWER; measure of how far the powered end delivers a stoke
*can only control power, not frequency (how fast tip moves)
Technique for subgingival calc removal
Top down approach/channeling
start at top of deposit and work in apical direction
Difference between 25K and 30K powered tip
25k: shorter less powerful strokes
30k: longer more powerful strokes
What is cavitation?
action that causes bubbles to form and collapse when water contacts vibrating working end
aids in breaking up microbial matrix of biofilm
Importance of water flow to working end
prevents overheating of the tip to avoid pulpal damage, increases visibility
Triple Bend (orange)
SUPRA
mod-heavy
Slimline/Swivel (black)
SUB
mod-heavy
good for concavities, root curves, furcations
Perio (blue)
SUB
mod-heavy
straighter tip reaches into deep pockets
