ulcerative collitis
A
- inflammation of the most superficial layer of the mucosa and submucosa limited to colon and rectum
- continous inflammatory lesion which progresses from distal to proximal colon

Pathophysiology of ulcerative colitis
A
- autoimmune cytotoxic T cells attack lining of the colon causing ulcers
- high proportion of pANCA antibodies which cross react with neutrophil
- high proportion of sulfide producing gut bacteria

riskfactors
A
- increased risk of colon cancer -> adenocarcinoma/intestinal lymphoma
- Cholongiocarcinoma

treatment
A
- Colectomy - removal of large colon cures the disease as its limited to rectum etc
- Smoking - a protective factor
