Colorectal cancer Flashcards
1
Q
Familial adenomatous polyps
A
- Familial adenomatous polyp
- deleted copy of APC gene ( tumor supressor)
- numerous polyps form on the inside of the colon
- increased likelihood of cancer under 50
2
Q
The adenocarcinoma sequence - familial adenomatous polyp cancer
A
- normal colon mucosa
-> APC gene mutation -> polyp forming - Early adenoma - polyp
-> KRAS ( oncogene) mutation -> bigger polyps - TP53 tumor supressor gene mutation
T(P53) regulated progress of cell into G2 - Adenocarcinoma forms
3
Q
Lynch syndrome
A
- Heriditiary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer
- > MMR gene which corrects DNA sequence mismatches during replication
- > accumulation of mutations - cancer
4
Q
GIST
A
- caused by mutation of KIT protooncogene
- tumors form in intestinal cells of Cajal
- tumors can become malignant and be found in the large bowel
5
Q
types of colorectal cancer
A
- GIST
- Lynch syndrome
- Familial adenomatous polyp ( cancer)
6
Q
symptoms of colorectal cancer
A
- bleeding from back passage
- Change in bowel habits
- Loss of weight
- Vomiting and fatigue
7
Q
treatment
A
- rectal exam - feel for polyps
- colonoscopy - check for polyps and biopsy
- barium enema
- remove colon
