Ulcer Drugs Flashcards
1
Q
List 3 drugs that decreases acid secretion and describe their MOA
A
- Cimentidine: H2 receptor (on parietal cells) antagonist
- Pirenzepine: Muscarinic receptor (on parietal cells) antagonist
- Omeprazole: Proton pump inhibitor
2
Q
List 2 drugs that acts as an antacid and neutralises the stomach acid
A
- Sodium bicarbonate
2. Calcium carbonate
3
Q
List 3 agents that promotes mucosal defence and describe their MOA
A
- Sucralfate: releases Al3+ and becomes negatively charged and bind to positively charged glycoprotein on the mucosal wall (acts as a barrier)
- Bismuth: combines with mucus glycoprotein to form barrier, stimulate secretion of mucus and has direct antimicrobial activity against H. Pylori (so used to Tx of H. Pylori as well)
- Misoprostol: prostaglandin analogue that promotes mucus production by mucus cells
4
Q
List 4 drugs that can be used to eradicate H. Pylori (aside from Bismuth) and describe their MOA
A
- Amoxicillin: inhibit transpeptidase
- Clarithromycin: binds to 50s subunit of ribosomes
- Tetracycline: binds to 30s subunit of ribosomes
- Metronidazole: dirupt DNA helical structure and inhibit DNA synthesis
