Parasites drugs Flashcards
1
Q
Describe 2 types of Protozoa Infections
A
Amebiasis and Malaira
2
Q
List 3 drugs for amebiasis and describe their MOA
A
- Chloroquine: Parasites digest RBC for food but the heme released will kill them. They use Heme polymerase to convert the heme into hemozoin that is non-toxic. Chloroquine inhibits Heme polymerase and the toxic heme is not degraded.
- Metronidazole: Damage protozoa DNA and inhibit DNA synthesis
- Iodoquinol: MOA unknown but useful against amebae in intestinal lumen
3
Q
List 4 malaria drugs and describe their MOA
A
- Chloroquine
- Proguanil: dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor
- Tetracycline: 30s protein
- Artemisinin: Chi. med, MOA unknown
4
Q
List 3 antihelmintic drugs and describe their MAO
A
- Mebendazole: inhibit worm’s ability to absorb glucose
- Pyrantel: Increase Ca2+ permeability and paralyse parasites
- Ivermectin: paralysis and death of parasites
