Q

List 3 drugs for amebiasis and describe their MOA

A
  1. Chloroquine: Parasites digest RBC for food but the heme released will kill them. They use Heme polymerase to convert the heme into hemozoin that is non-toxic. Chloroquine inhibits Heme polymerase and the toxic heme is not degraded.
  2. Metronidazole: Damage protozoa DNA and inhibit DNA synthesis
  3. Iodoquinol: MOA unknown but useful against amebae in intestinal lumen
