UK Physical Landscapes Flashcards
What are the features of the uplands of UK?
The uplands are rugged, have steep relief and weathered rocks
What are the three rocks types?
The three rocks types in the UK are igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary
How are igneous rocks formed? (eg granite)
Igneous rocks are formed when magma cools and hardens
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
Metamorphic rocks are caused by heat and pressure
What are sedimentary rocks?
Sedimentary rocks are layers of packed sediment overtime
What are some examples of sedimentary rocks?
Sedimentary rocks include limestone, chalk and clay
What are mountain ranges?
Mountain ranges are rocks folding and uplifting as a result of plate collision. They generate heat and pressure, leading to the formation of hard metamorphic rocks
What are climatological processes?
Climatological processes are how the climate affects how physical processes happen and interact eg freeze-thaw
What is weathering?
Weathering is the breakdown of rocks where they are
What are the human activities which impact the physical landscape processes?
The human activities which impact the physical landscape processes are foresty, settlements and agriculture
How does agriculture impact physical landscape processes?
Agriculture impacts physical landscape processes due to:
- Drainage ditches - built to drain water away from low-lying agricultural land to allow crops to grow
- Trees being cleared for agriculture
What is forestry?
Forestry is planting, managing and caring for forests for different purposes such as nature conservation, landscaping, recreation and timber production
How do settlements impact physical landscape processes?
Settlements impact physical landscape processes as they are built up where landscape offers particular advantages eg:
- River meander loops made good defensive locations
- Natural harbours were sites for fishing villages
- Springs gave people reliable freshwater
