Component 2 : Consuming Energy Resources Flashcards
What are the three types of energy resources?
The three types of energy resources include renewable, non-renewable and recyclable
What factors affect the distribution of energy?
Factors that affect the distribution of energy include climate, development, geology
How does geology affect the distribution of energy?
Countries that live close to plate boundaries or oil reserves have higher access to energy. Living on plate boundaries increase geothermal energy
How does climate affect the distribution of energy?
Climate affects the distribution of energy as for example, in sunnier areas they have more access to solar energy whereas in areas of high rainfall there is more access to HEP
How does the development of a country affect the distribution of energy?
More developed countries have access to better, new technology
What can the increased demand for oil lead to?
The increased demand for oil leads to increased extraction. If oil is in higher supply, it will cost less.
Why may prices of oil increase?
Prices of oil can increase when there is a shortage in supply or where there are disruption in supply such as oil spills
How does traditional fuel sources cause variation in energy use?
Traditional fuel sources can be biomass fuels that are used in rural areas of developing countries
What is energy effeciency?
Energy effeciency is when you are being provided with the same service but using less energy
What is energy conservation?
Energy conservation is not using as much energy
Name ways of which homes can increase energy effeciency
Homes can increase energy effeciency with:
- double glazing
- solar panels
- loft insulation
- energy monitors
- energy efficient supplies
How has London contributed to energy-efficient transport?
London has introduced congestion charges, saving 19% in traffic-related CO2 emissions
How has Paris contributed to energy-efficient transport?
Paris introduced the cycling scheme, which resulted in thousands of tonnes of CO2 being reduce
What are the positives of using wind turbines as a renewable energy resource?
The positives of using wind turbines as a renewable energy resource include less pollution and offshore can generate lots of energy
What are the negatives of using wind turbines as a renewable energy resource?
The negatives of using wind turbines as a renewable energy resource include that it is unattractive and that it increases bird deaths
What are the positives of hydroelectric power?
Hydroelectric power is reliable and constant, and HEP plants can also build dams for reduced flooding
What are the negatives of hydroelectric power?
The negatives of HEP are that they are expensive to build and can change river flow which can impact wildlife
What are the positives of biofuels?
Biofuels produce fewer carbon emissions when burned and it recycles crops and organic matter which leads to less waste and landfill
What are the negatives of biofuels?
Biofuels require a lot of water and it can also increase deforestation as demand increases
What are the reasons for increased renewable energy?
Renewable energy has increased as there has been rising affluence leading to environmental concerns and education, which means there is a greater awareness of climate and more people support the need for cleaner energy
How can individuals reduce their energy consumption?
Individuals can reduce energy by calculating their carbon footprint and increasing their energy efficiency or conservation
How has organisations affected the use of energy?
Some organisation has increased their use of sustainable practices however some companies still prefer cheaper nonrenewable energy
How has governments affected the use of energy?
Governments have a choice between sustainable living and cheap energy for economic growth, especially in developing areas eg India
