Component 2 - The UK's evolving physical landscape Flashcards
What are the features of soft rock?
Soft rock are more easily eroded
Cliffs are less rugged and less steep than hard rock coasts
Soft rock landscapes include bays
What are the features of hard rock?
Hard rock is resistant to all types of erosion
Cliffs are high, steep and less rugged
Hard rock landscapes include wave cut platforms and headlands
What are concordant coasts?
Concordant coasts are made up of the same rock type, parallel to the sea
What are discordant coasts?
Discodant coasts are made up of alternating rock types in layers, perpendicular to the sea
What factors affect rate of erosion?
Factors which affect the rate of erosion include: Geological structure Wave climate Local currents and tidal energy Ground water levels
How are headlands and bays formed?
Headlands and bays are formed when water erodes the soft rock in a cliff forming bays, and headlands are formed when the hard rock sticks out from the cliff due its resistance to erosion
