uk physical Flashcards
three rock types
igneous - magma (granite)
sedimentary - compressed sediment (clay, chalk, carboniferous limestone)
metamorphic - igneous/sedimentary rock changed by heat or pressure (shale into slate, schist)
the UK’s geological halves
upland landscapes - igneous and metamorphic rock
lowland landscapes - sedimentary rock
igneous characteristics
hard and resistant to erosion
susceptible to chemical weathering
impermeable and landscapes are badly drained (boggy)
tors are towers of granite chemically weathered into blocks
metamorphic characteristics
strong and resistant to erosion and weathering
slate made from clay
layers in clay make weak planes in slate
schist made from shale
schist splits easily
sedimentary - clay
weak and impermeable
water can’t move through it
clay landscapes are wide, flat plains
sedimentary - chalk
strong and permeable
forms cliffs at coastlines
only found in lowland Britain
