What is the asthenosphere?
Tectonic activity
What is the lithosphere?
Rocks
Geology
Weathering and formation of soils
What is the cryosphere?
Ice
Glaciation
Permafrost
What are the three types of weathering?
Mechanical - water entering through rocks, expanding and breaking them (freeze thaw weathering)
Biological - micro-organisms eat away at inside of rock. Trees and animals break rocks down
Chemical - chemical reactions between rain/other liquids
What is suspension?
Fine material (sediment) carried by the river
What is solution?
Dissolved minerals carried by the river
What is traction?
Large boulders and pebbles are rolled along the river bed
What is saltation?
Small stones, pebbles and silt bounce along the river bed
What are the four types of transportation?
Suspension
Solution
Traction
Saltation
What is crustal rebound?
When ground underneath glaciers rises back up after being pushed down by the glaciers pressure
What is eustatic rebound?
The result of artificially-driven climate change increasing sea levels
