UK Landscapes (Geology) : Physical Processes Flashcards
why does biological weathering occur?
because of plant roots and animals breaking down rock
why does chemical weathering occur?
when chemicals lead to the disintegration of rocks through reactions.
what is an example of chemical weathering?
carbonation
why does mechanical / physical weathering occur?
when climates of an area break down rock without change to the minerals that form rock
what are the four types of mass movement?
landslide, rotational slip, mudflow and rockfall
what is a landslide?
rocks slide along slip / bedding plane
what causes a landslide?
due to pressure, gravity and saltation of the bedding plane
what is a rotational slip?
slumping of saturated soil and weak rock along a curved surface
what is a mudflow?
saturated soil and sediments flow down because of gravity
what is a rock fall?
rock breaks away from cliff due to weathering
what can a rock fall lead to?
a dangerous collapse
