UK Isostatic sea level rise Flashcards
Why is isostatic sea level change occurring in the UK?
Glacial Rebound in Scotland from the last glacial period is causing the NW to rise and the SE to fall, resulting in sea level change.
UK Ria Example:
Poole Harbour in Dorset is a Ria (drowned river valley) formed at the end of the last ice age due to isostatic and Eustatic sea level rise.
How is London at risk?
Isostatic and Eustatic sea level rise risks flooding and large tidal changes up the Thames.
How much have sea levels risen?
Sea levels have risen by around 16.5cm since 1900, but the Met Office says the rate of rise is increasing.
They are now rising by 3-5.2mm a year, which is more than double the rate of increase in the early part of last century.
