UK FIS Flashcards

Q

What services are provided by INT under the UK Flight Information Services (UK FIS)?

A

The services provided by INT under UK FIS include:

  • AS (Alerting Service)
  • BS (Basic Service)
  • TS (Traffic Service)
  • DS (Deconfliction Service)

These services are detailed in CAP774.

Q

What is the purpose of the Alerting Service in aviation?

A

The Alerting Service is provided to notify appropriate organizations about aircraft in need of Search and Rescue (SAR) aid and to assist those organizations as required.

Q

What is a Basic Service in air traffic control, and what is the controller’s responsibility under this service?

A

Basic Service: An Air Traffic Service (ATS) that provides advice and information useful for the safe and efficient conduct of flights. The pilot is solely responsible for avoiding other traffic.
Controller’s Responsibility:
* Provide basic traffic information (e.g., “GABCD, traffic is a PA28 routing from Armagh to Dungannon, not above 2A VFR”).
* Do not provide surveillance-derived (clock-code) information.
* Issue a warning if a definite risk of collision is identified.

Q

What is a Traffic Service in air traffic control, and what are the controller’s responsibilities under this service?

A

Traffic Service: A surveillance-based Air Traffic Service (ATS) that, in addition to Basic Service provisions, provides specific surveillance-derived traffic information to help the pilot avoid other traffic.

Controller’s Responsibilities:

  • Identify the aircraft and inform the pilot that it is identified, maintaining that identity.
  • Aim to pass traffic information on relevant aircraft before they are within 5 NM, allowing the pilot time to take necessary avoidance actions.
  • Provide headings and/or levels for positioning and sequencing but is not required to achieve deconfliction minima.
  • Ultimately, the pilot is responsible for avoiding other traffic.

Note: If deconfliction advice is needed outside controlled airspace, the pilot must request a Deconfliction Service.

Q

What is a Deconfliction Service, and what are the key responsibilities of the controller under this service?

A

Deconfliction Service: A surveillance-based Air Traffic Service (ATS) where the controller provides specific surveillance-derived traffic information and issues headings and/or levels aimed at achieving planned deconfliction minima. This is in addition to the provisions of a Basic Service. However, the pilot remains ultimately responsible for avoiding other traffic.

Key Responsibilities of the Controller:

  • Traffic Information: Provide detailed traffic information, especially if separation may become less than 3 NM laterally or 3,000 feet vertically.
  • Headings and Levels: Issue headings and levels for achieving planned deconfliction or for positioning/sequencing.
  • Separation Minima: Ensure a minimum separation of 5 NM or 3,000 feet against unknown or uncoordinated traffic.
  • Identification and Terrain Safety: Ensure the aircraft is identified and maintain terrain safety.

Service Type Comparison:

  • Basic: Any flight rules, no identification required, terrain safety is the pilot’s responsibility, general traffic info.
  • Traffic: Any flight rules, identification required, controller provides traffic info and headings, pilot responsible for deconfliction.
  • Deconfliction: IFR, identification required, controller responsible for providing deconfliction minima, traffic info, and terrain safety.

Q

How does radar availability affect the types of UK Flight Information Services (UK FIS) that can be provided?

A
  • Alerting Service: Available with PSR, SSR only, and non-radar.
  • Basic Service: Available with PSR, SSR only, and non-radar.
  • Traffic Service: Available with PSR and SSR only (limited to transponding aircraft), not available with non-radar.
  • Deconfliction Service: Available with PSR, not available with SSR only or non-radar.

Note: During SSR-only operations, the Traffic Service provides reduced traffic information, applicable only to transponding aircraft.
