U4AOS2 - Energy Content of Foods Flashcards
Balanced Cellular Respiration Formula
Purpose of Calorimetry
To determine the amount of heat energy transferred in a system
Calibration Factor (theory)
Joules/Kilojoules of energy required to raise the temperature of the calorimeter by one degree
(measured in J °C-1 or kJ °C-1)
Finding the Calibration Factor
a known amount of energy will be delivered to the water, and the rise in temperature will be recorded
Calibration Graphs (where is Delta T)
Will the energy content metabolized by the body be equal to the energy content released through combustion
No:
- not all components of food that undergo combustion e.g. cellulose can be digested by the body - therefore less energy would be available
- also - not all food ingested (that could be digested) is actually digested - so it will provided less energy than in a calorimeter
