What are closed skills?
- Self-paced.
- Low inter-trial variability.
- Predictable environment.
What are open skills?
- Externally paced.
- Higher inter-trial variability.
- Unpredictable environment.
What are discrete skills?
- Easily defined by a distinct and obvious beginning and end
- A single skill
e.g. baseball throw
What are serial skills?
A series or group of discrete skills strung together to create more complicated, skilled action
e.g. gymnastics routine and triple jump
What are continuous skills?
Has no distinct and obvious beginning or end
e.g. cycling and rowing
What is a fine skill?
Involves the cooperative use of small muscle groups and the senses of sight and touch
- Emphasis on precision
- Often involves coordination between the hands and eye
e.g. writing and throwing a dart
What are gross skills?
- Involves recruitment of large muscles groups to create large movements
- Less emphasis on precision
- Involves fundamental movement patterns e.g. walking, running, balance, coordination, jumping
e.g. bowling a cricket ball and kicking a footy
What are fundamental movement skills?
Are foundation skills that provide the basis for the development of more sport-specific skills
What are the types of fundamental movement skills?
Stability skills:
- balance and control over the body
e.g. balance and body control
Locomotor skills:
- enable us to move through space
e.g. walking and running
Manipulative skills:
- control of an object
e.g. kicking, throwing, striking, catching
What are sport specific skills?
Often utilise a range of fundamental movement skills in a sequence of movement
