U3.2: Electron Transfer Reactions Flashcards
Define oxidation reactions
Oxidation reactions show a loss in electrons and hydrogen, a gain of Oxygen and an increase in oxidation number
Define reduction reactions
Reduction reactions show a gain in electrons and hydrogen, a loss of Oxygen and a decrease in oxidation number
State what alcohols can be oxidised to
Alcohols can be oxidised to carboxylic acids
Oxidising agents get reduced or oxidised?
Oxidising agents get reduced
Show the gain and loss of electrons in an equation. State which is oxidation and reduction
- x + e- –> y (reduction)
- x –> y + e- (oxidation)
State why noble gases dont gain or lose electrons
They do not have IE, EN values or oxidation states
For noble gases, which periods have 8 electrons in the outer shell
The first 2 periods only, beyond period 2, there is an octet outer shell
