Social History
The forces of production shape English and the way people use it, and it changes over time (historically). Language develops and varies according to the needs and interests of people in a specific situations and times. The investigation of communication as a social function
Semantic Change
A form of language change regarding the evolution of word usage. Occurs through language use.
Social Function
The role literature played in society. English gradually came to symbolize Christianity, military, administrative power, and modern technology. It played a key role in colonialism, economics, and education.
Critical Linguistic History
A social history perspective. There is selectivity, attitude, and a sense of historicity that determine the canon of English studies and how it is used to interpret and represent progress. Institutional prioritization results in a process of selection, ordering, and interpretation that leads to accepted views of literary history and communication.
