U1AOS1 Plasma membrane Flashcards
What is the plasma membrane?
Made of phospholipids and protein and encloses the contents of a cell
How are the lipids and proteins arranged?
the fluid mosaic model: arranged vertically.
What is the phospholipid bilayer?
AKA plasma/cell membrane and is made of phospholipids.
What does each phospholipid have?
A polar, hydrophilic, phosphate-containing head
Two non-polar, hydrophobic, fatty acid tails.
Antibody protein
Important for immune system
Channel protein
Selectively lets ions through the membrane
Carrier proteins
Push things through the membrane in both directions
Enzymes
Take one molecule and change it into a different molecule
What do cytoskeleton fibres do?
Hold the cell in shape and are connected to proteins
Peripheral protein
floating on the surface of the membrane
Integral protein
Embedded in the fatty acid tail
Transmembrane protein
Passes all the way through the membrane
