U12-Energy Flashcards
Energy
The ability to do work or the capacity to cause change.
Kinetic Energy
The energy an object possesses due to its motion, determined by its mass and velocity (speed).
Potential Energy
Stored energy an object possesses due to its position, properties, or arrangement, and it has the capacity to be converted into kinetic energy (energy of motion) or other forms of energy
Gravitational Potential Energy
The energy an object possesses due to its position in a gravitational field, specifically its height or vertical position relative to a reference point
Mechanical Energy
The energy an object possesses due to its motion (kinetic energy) or position (potential energy), representing its ability to do work
Chemical Potential Energy
The energy stored within the chemical bonds of a substance, which can be released during a chemical reaction.
Electrical Potential Energy
A potential energy that results from conservative Coulomb forces and is associated with the configuration of a particular set of point charges within a defined system
Nuclear Energy
The energy stored within the nucleus of an atom, released through processes like fission (splitting atoms) or fusion (combining atoms), and used to generate electricity or other forms of energy
Radiant Energy
Energy transmitted in the form of electromagnetic waves
Elastic Potential Energy
The energy stored in an elastic object (like a spring or rubber band) when it’s stretched or compressed, which it can release and convert to kinetic energy when the force is removed, allowing it to return to its original shape
Sound Energy
A form of mechanical energy that travels as vibrations through a medium (like air, water, or solids) and is characterized by frequency, amplitude, and duration
Conservation of Energy
A pendulum, where potential energy at the top of its swing converts to kinetic energy as it swings down, and back again
Thermal Energy
The total kinetic energy of the moving particles (atoms and molecules) within a substance, measured by its temperature
