What is the House of Lords? (HOL)
The unelected branch of parliament, doesn’t directly represent the people of the U.K.
Those who are members are referred to as ‘peers’
What are the roles of the House of Lords?
Debate- they do have party affiliations however tend to be less partisan than MPs in the commons. Legislation can be improved by their contributions
Legislation- most bills are passed by the HOL before becoming law, however if they reject a non financial bill that has been passed by the Commons in 2 consecutive parliamentary sessions it automatically becomes law
Scrutiny- plays an active role in scrutinising the work of the government and in some cases challenges the governments intentions
