Q

What are the roles of the House of Lords?

A

Debate- they do have party affiliations however tend to be less partisan than MPs in the commons. Legislation can be improved by their contributions

Legislation- most bills are passed by the HOL before becoming law, however if they reject a non financial bill that has been passed by the Commons in 2 consecutive parliamentary sessions it automatically becomes law

Scrutiny- plays an active role in scrutinising the work of the government and in some cases challenges the governments intentions
